Our History

Our Parish History: From Mission to Monumental Church.

Birth of the Kanhai Mission

Foundation of the Mission.

The history of the Church of the Immaculate Conception began in 1930 when an English Capuchin Friar from St. Mary’s Church, Old Delhi, initiated the Kanhai Mission. He regularly travelled to Kanhai to offer pastoral care to the small but growing Catholic community. In time, a modest chapel was constructed, becoming a spiritual centre for early believers and setting the foundation for what would eventually grow into a vibrant parish.

Education & Social Service Begin

Expanding Social Outreach.

In the 1960s, under the leadership of Fr. Samuel William, the mission expanded its focus beyond worship to active social upliftment. Living at St. Michael’s Church, he travelled daily to serve the village. With support from the Christian Children’s Fund (CCF), he launched several development programs aimed at supporting families and children. A Primary School was opened to provide accessible education for village children, marking a significant step in the mission’s community engagement.

Arrival of PSA Sisters

Strengthening Community Care.

A new chapter opened in 1969 with the arrival of the Prabhudasi Sisters (PSA). The Sisters established and managed the Nirmala Health and Maternity Centre, offering essential healthcare services to the local population. The parish simultaneously ran the Bal Kalyan Kendra, supporting children and families through welfare schemes. This collaboration greatly strengthened the mission’s social impact and deepened its role in the daily lives of the community.

our vision

A Growing Catholic Population .

The 1990s marked a period of rapid growth for the Catholic community in Gurgaon. Under the pastoral care of priests such as Fr. Freddie D’Souza, Fr. Mobin Michael, and Fr. Anthony Francis, the region saw an increasing number of families settling in areas like Sushant Lok, Maruti Vihar, and neighbouring localities. This steady migration expanded the parish boundaries and introduced new cultural and linguistic diversity, enriching the life of the church.

Construction of the New Church

Building a New Spiritual Home.

With the rise in Catholic families, the need for a larger place of worship became clear. In 1999, under the leadership of Fr. Lourdusamy, construction began for a new Church and rectory. Known for his personal outreach efforts—often approaching families he noticed by the rosary in their cars—he helped bring the community together. The new Church, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady, was inaugurated on 9 November 2003 by Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao, marking a historic milestone for the parish.

Enhancing Worship Spaces & Parish Structure

Renovation & Parish Development.

Through the 2010s, the parish saw significant improvements under priests such as Fr. Arul Anthony and Fr. Denny. The sanctuary backdrop was upgraded, interior renovations were completed, and infrastructure was strengthened. An Adoration Chapel was built, providing a serene space for quiet prayer and devotion. These enhancements helped modernize the church while preserving its sacred character.

Vibrant Leadership & Renewed Community Life

Strengthening Community Engagement.

In recent years, the parish has focused on deepening fellowship and administrative effectiveness. New parish zones were created and the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) were activated to encourage stronger local participation.
